Warm Hazelnut Hot Chocolate Green Smoothie
This hazelnut chocolate shake uses roasted hazelnuts, and is simply decadent. This is a dark, rich hot chocolate is a serious game changer.
It’s naturally sweetened with dates and gets its chocolatey flavor from one of our favorite superfoods, raw cacao powder. Does that packaged hot chocolate have vitamin K, iron, and antioxidants? Yeah, we didn’t think so.
We love sipping on healthy hot chocolate. It’s downright a necessity when it’s chilly and the only thing that sounds nice is cuddling up to some Netflix and a comfy blanket. We love the hot chocolate recipe from Jen’s book Simple Green Meals, but we also love this hot chocolate green smoothie made with fresh spinach and hazelnuts. It’s proof you can have your green smoothie and dessert in one. Mmm! #yesplease

Hazelnut Hot Chocolate
Here in Wisconsin, I’ve learned there’s a lot to do to prepare your yard for winter, or the first real snow fall. Leaves need to be raked up, bushes and certain plants trimmed and you need to make sure your snow blower has a full gas tank. On a day where my husband spent HOURS sucking up leaves and trimming the bushes, I trimmed our hydrangeas and my kids were even helping us with some yard work, we came back in from a very cold afternoon and happily sipped on this delicious Hazelnut Hot Chocolate, a delightful twist on your average hot chocolate!
Last week, I told you guys about a recent trip to Chicago for ALDI. On the first day, we started with a visit to ALDI headquarters, where we visited their test kitchen and participated in a blind tasting of several food products. Each station featured an ALDI brand versus a leading national brand. We sampled everything from orange juice to yogurt to granola bars and tortilla chips and I chose the ALDI brand 9 out of 10 times. Tastes better and costs less? Pretty great if you ask me!
We then moved on to our Sensory Pairings session, where we participated in a joint food and wine pairings presentation and demonstration. Spending the afternoon sampling wine and eating food was pretty fun and filling. We ended the day with a dinner prepared by the ALDI Test Kitchen chefs and left full and happy.
On the next day, we visited an ALDI grocery store in Illinois. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen some of the photos and the video of this store. Now, this ALDI is a lot bigger than the one I go to in Madison so I had to capture it on video. What I love about ALDI stores is their philosophy: Cutting back on certain things like credit card machines and not having any plastic or brown bags (forcing you to bring in your own reusable bags, which I think is brilliant!), so they are able to offer you high quality products at super LOW prices.
ALDI also offers great, seasonal and organic produce and dairy. To find out if your local ALDI carries organic products, click here to reach out to Customer Service, where you can inquire on specific products at your local ALDI store.
If you haven’t shopped at an ALDI before, here is what you need to know:
The Carts: They keep their carts in one convenient place. You put a quarter in the cart, shop and then return the cart to get your quarter back. This helps to keep prices low because they don&rsquot spend time retrieving carts.
Checkout: Credit card processing fees are expensive. By only accepting cash, debit and EBT cards, it helps to keep their prices low.
Bags: Bring your own bags or purchase reusable ones at checkout.
Saving Green: Everything they do from their smaller, energy-saving stores to recycled bags and cartons capture the very essence of conservation. As a result, you can save up to 50% on the majority of your needs.
Our Brands: ALDI brands are made of the same, or even higher, quality than national brands. Plus, they&rsquore backed by ALDI’s Double Guarantee.
Select Assortment: While a typical supermarket carries about 30,000 items, ALDI sells only about 1,400 of the fastest-moving grocery items &ndash most of which are their high-quality brands. Smaller inventory means smaller stores, which leads to lower rent and electricity costs. This allows ALDI to pass the savings on to you.
Select Hours: A typical ALDI store stays open during the most popular shopping hours. Staying open later would simply add labor costs.
Switch & Save: Switching to ALDI-exclusive brands saves you up to 50%* over national brands on the things you buy the most. What could be easier?
As we enter the holiday season and the end of the year, it’s all about spending wisely so you have enough saved up for other things. If you have an ALDI store close to you, stop in for a visit! I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving and I hope your table is filled with family, friends and some great food! And if you’re already experiencing some really cold weather, like we are here in Wisconsin, you need to warm up to some of this delicious, rich and creamy Hazelnut Hot Chocolate. I hope you enjoy!
Hazelnut Italian Hot Chocolate (Cioccolata Calda alla Nocciola)
This Hazelnut Italian Hot Chocolate, or Cioccolata Calda alla Nocciola, is a seriously indulgent thick hot chocolate recipe made with real chocolate, hazelnut liqueur and Nutella. It’s quick and easy to make, and it is the best homemade (or otherwise) hot chocolate you will ever taste – whip up a batch of this thick, rich, and dangerously delicious Italian Hot Chocolate today, and whisk yourself off to Europe in the comfort of your own home!
Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links (learn more about this on my disclosure page)
Oh boy, have I got an amazing treat for you today! This Hazelnut Italian Hot Chocolate is honestly one of the most delicious drinks I have ever had in my life. It is a seriously thick hot chocolate recipe, that is so indulgent you’ll feel like you’re drinking melted chocolate, but so much better! I actually developed the recipe for this thick Italian Hot Chocolate last spring, and while the recipe was amazing and definitely worth sharing, the photos did not do it justice and I really needed to show you how damn good this Italian Hot Chocolate really was. But then summer came and it was too warm, and then life happened and, well, you know how it goes!
But I will make you wait for this Italian Hot Chocolate recipe no longer! When I was making it again to redo the photos I actually made it even better, with a boozy option! My Hazelnut Italian Hot Chocolate recipe now really does check all the boxes – thick, indulgent, made with real chocolate, has Nutella, is easy to make, and you can make it a boozy hot chocolate, you’re welcome! I used hazelnut liqueur in this Hazelnut Italian Hot Chocolate recipe, in both the thick hot chocolate itself and in the whipped cream! I cannot recommend hazelnut liqueur enough, it’s creamy and so delicious (and I plan to use it in more recipes soon, so grab a bottle and get ready!). The brand I used is an Italian brand called Serravinci which can be hard to find, while not as cream Frangelico would be a good substitute. If you can’t get your hands on some though, you can totally swap for some baileys/Irish cream (even better if you can get the chocolate one), or even some Caramelised White Chocolate Liqueur/regular White Chocolate Liqueur – yum!
Can’t get enough Chocolate? Check out all my indulgent chocolate recipes here!
So, more about this thick and indulgent Hazelnut Italian Chocolate – it’s not that sad, disappointing watery hot chocolate you make with instant powder and water, maybe a splash of milk if you’re feeling fancy. This is real European style hot chocolate that takes the word “chocolate” in the title seriously! It is so thick and indulgent, when you serve it people will think you’re handing them a mug of melted chocolate, but it’s even better than that.
In this Italian Hot Chocolate we have butter, milk, Nutella, hazelnut liqueur, and real chocolate. Because it is so thick, you serve it with a bowl of whipped cream for people to spoon into the steaming, thick hot chocolate to thin it down to their desired consistency, and then to add a dollop on top of course! Then you drizzle on some Nutella sauce and sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts – bellissima!
Picture yourself sitting outside a quaint little café in Rome, people watching, while sipping on this seriously indulgent and thick Italian Hot Chocolate, your moped parked up not far away – taking your time to enjoy this luxury hot chocolate drink – just close your eyes while you enjoy my Italian Hot Chocolate and you’ll almost feel like you’re there. I’ve never actually been to Italy myself, so I may not be able to guarantee this is the absolute authentic experience but it’s so damn good, you won’t care either way. I am, however, learning to speak Italian with the help of an app and my Italian boyfriend so I’m halfway there – and Rome is on the top of my list of places to visit ASAP!
Grab a cup of this thick and indulgent Italian Hot Chocolate and enjoy the chocolatey moment!/Prenditi una tazza di questa cioccolata calda indulgente e goditi il momento del cioccolato!
Reviews
Easy, simple recipe. I skipped the vanilla because I replaced 1/4 cup of milk with Coffeemate Hazelnut creamer . This was a big hit with my grandson.
Unsweetened cocoa powder: Would that be regular (like Hershey’s) or Dutch-processed (Droste)? Thank you.
Love the flexibility of this recipe. I never know how many people I will be making cocoa for and who might need what type of milk.
Lovely smooth hot chocolate. Used about 3/4 Tbsp of sugar per cup of milk. Very tasty and would not use more sugar and could use less.
So I was looking for a good recipe I have to admit me and my wife have loved this recipe since we tried it .
Great base hot coco recipe. I used 2 tbs coco powder and sugar and added a pinch of ground cinnamon as well. I will be making this recipe again!
Eyeballed it with a large spoon. Two spoons of cocoa and two of white sugar. Then pinch of salt then a little vanilla. Added 5 dark chocolate chips and marshmallows. Heated up 2% milk with fat free half and half and a little full fat heavy cream - -it's what I had. Then once that got frothy in the microwave I added it to the mug and gave it a good stir. Then topped it with more marshmallows and whipped cream from a can. Ahhhhmmmazing!
love this. instead of the 1/4 of vanilla i added peppermint extract. would definetly make this again
After whisking together the sugar, cocoa and 2 Tbsp milk, I gradually whisked in about half the milk, and microwaved for 30s. Repeated with the remaining milk. And continued to microwave at 30s intervals, whisking in between, until hot.
Found you by chance on the internet. Best drinking chocolate I have ever had.
Mine got burnt The saucepan and everything They should really put things in bold but they didn't and that's why it got burnt , it got burnt by following that recipe
Everyone should make this it so easy to make and we did not have any hot chocolate mix left so I made this and it sure hit the spot this is a rate to 10/10
Just made this, and honestly, for a quick cocoa, it hit the spot perfectly! Subbed in chocolate for half the milk, and it was ah-mazing! :)
Made this with my son and we are in love!! We love the dark ish cocoa flavor, and instead of vanilla extract, we subsisteded for orange extract. To.die.for.
this was so good! i added a bit of peppermint extract and some crushed candy canes and it was amazing!
This was great! Perfect amount of cocoa and milk recommended! Would definitely make it again! very tasty :)
Wonderful chocolate taste, just like from the coffee shop. I don't lake to much sweet things so I put only 1ts of honey and no sugar.
I tried it with garlic because I thought it would make it healthier but it doesn’t taste very nice. I’m sure it would be good with out it though.
Delicious. It has very strong flavour if you use good quality cocoa. So if you don’t like your hot chocolate super strong I recommend using an extra 1/3 to 1/2 of a cup of milk.
Tasty as written with whole milk but 2nd time I made it using 2 teaspoons of sugar and it was just as good. Use a quality, natural extract, not imitation. I'm going to try it with homemade almond milk soon.
Turned out great! I had to add 1/4 cup milk to the cocoa and sugar (2T was not nearly enough, which was easy to see and adjust on the fly). Otherwise I did it exactly as directed and it was delicious and so easy! I used Trader Joe's cocoa powder which is extra delicious, if you have it. And just 1 T of sugar, as I don't like my hot cocoa too sweet. It turned out deeply chocolatey and delicious (and I used skim milk!).
Winner, winnner. Far better than hot chocolate from a Swiss Miss packet but almost as easy to make. When I made my first mugful, I got a bit too excited: I didn't fully read the directions and dumped all the dry ingredients into the cup of milk, rather than dissolving them in a wee bit of milk first. Of course, cocoa lumps resulted, but I was still sold on the creaminess and chocolatiness of this recipe.

Hazelnut Bourbon Hot Chocolate: A Holiday Helper
There&rsquos no easy fix for how a lot of us are feeling right now.
Part of me feels frivolous for even suggesting that we bake pies and eat gingerbread cookies when things seem so bleak, but I&rsquom not a pessimist at heart.
I&rsquom a worrier, a fretter, and a complainer, but what I always want to do above all is make things better.
Photo: Casey Barber
And how do I do that? With phone calls, with donations, with volunteering, and with food. And with hazelnut bourbon hot chocolate.
We have one month to go in 2016, and it&rsquos an important one for revving up our engines of hope, determination, and resolutions for a better future.
I can&rsquot promise that 2017 will be a miraculous improvement or even that December will manage to be truly merry, but I can try to help things along.
Photo: Casey Barber
And I&rsquom not saying that you need booze to get through the holiday season, but in the interest of making spirits bright, we might as well use a few shots to get the good vibes going.
Add a few generous spoonfuls of warm spices and a few more generous pours of bourbon and hazelnut liqueur to your mug.
And voila! Hot chocolate becomes a decidedly festive party drink that you should by no means keep in arms&rsquo reach of the kids&rsquo table.
Photo: Casey Barber
If you&rsquore feeling ambitious, or antsy, or just need a project for the next few weeks, you can make your own homemade hazelnut liqueur.
If you (like me) would prefer a bit more instant gratification, pick up a bottle of Frangelico or Creme de Noisette while you&rsquore stocking the holiday bar.
You won&rsquot have to wait two weeks to get your boozy hot chocolate going, which is a fair trade-off in my book.
Photo: Casey Barber
I usually take my hot chocolate straight&mdashthat is, I forego the whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and marshmallows to let the drink be my only indulgence.
But if we&rsquore going all out here, we might as well go all out.
For my husband, hot chocolate simply isn&rsquot worth drinking unless it&rsquos got a mountain of whipped cream on top.
He does not discriminate between the homemade kind (yes, he makes it himself) or the sprayed-from-a-can kind (with a little extra spritz right into the mouth, as is right and correct).
Photo: Casey Barber
But if I may make a more outré suggestion: have you considered topping your hot chocolate with gobs of marshmallow fluff?
That&rsquos what&rsquos floating on the drinks in these photographs, and frankly, it&rsquos unabashedly decadent. Think of it as an extra layer of holiday therapy if you must.
So let&rsquos give ourselves permission to enjoy the holidays, even if just for a little bit, and to use the time to strengthen our reserves for the coming year.
We don&rsquot have to wait one more week. We can start now with a mug of hazelnut bourbon hot chocolate: our secret weapon that will power us through.
A hazelnut substitute for nut allergies:
This cocktail can be an equally festive drink by substituting equal parts ginger liqueur and allspice dram, a spiced liqueur also used in the Christmas Island tiki cocktail, in place of the hazelnut liqueur.

Does Chocolate Hazelnut Butter Have Health Benefits?
Many popular chocolate hazelnut butters mention sugar and palm oil as the first products in their ingredient lists, making them more sugar and saturated fat spreads than hazelnut spreads. Once Again Nut Butter is committed to providing our customers with delicious products that are low in added sugar. Our organic chocolate hazelnut butters are sourced from high-quality ingredients and, when consumed in moderation, can offer just as many health benefits as regular hazelnut butters – they’re just a little more indulgent!
Indulge Your Sweet Tooth with Our New Chocolate Hazelnut Butter
As part of our tradition of providing satisfying gluten-free nut butter spreads, Once Again Nut Butter is proud to offer a new line of gourmet nut butters we call “Amoré.” New for 2018, and like most of our other fine all-natural nut butter and organic peanut butter products, our organic hazelnut spreads are made using only the finest food service nut ingredients with no cholesterol or trans-fat.

In addition to hazelnut, our new gourmet nut butters also include our traditional organic almond butter now enhanced with milk chocolate or white chocolate made from only high-quality cocoa butter. If you’re looking for healthy, natural, plant-based spreads to satisfy your sweet tooth, be sure to check out our Amoré nut butters below.
