- Vegetable oil (for brushing)
- 1 32-ounce bag tater tots (preferably Ore-Ida), room temperature
Heat a regular or Belgian waffle iron and brush liberally with oil.
Arrange tater tots in an even layer across entire surface of waffle iron; pile another handful or two of tots over if you’re using a Belgian waffle iron. Sprinkle with salt. Press down on lid to close (use lid lock if you have one) and cook waffle until golden brown, 8–12 minutes depending on your iron. Season with more salt, if needed.

Waffle-Iron Tater Tot Hash browns
There’s no greater let down than mushy hashy browns. Restaurants have a knack for serving pale yet greasy hash browns. Not my jam.
I like my hash browns crispy, golden browned, and not greasy.
There’s no easier way to achieve hash brown perfection than this easy kitchen hack. Dust off your waffle iron and enjoy hash browns that are the perfect balance of crispy yet tender.
I use refrigerated hash browns and I don’t even have to bother wringing them out. I’m sure you can make this recipe by grating your own russet potatoes but I’d rather not use a roll of paper towels to wring out all the moisture. Same goes for frozen hash browns because as they thaw they’ll release tons of water.
Water is the enemy of crispy hash browns and I find the refrigerated hash browns to have the least water and therefore are the least work.
As a healthy benefit there’s no oil, very little butter, and no eggs. They are not greasy at all and are very light-tasting.
I seasoned my hash browns with dried onion for extra flavor and served them with sour cream and chives.
Because all waffle irons, potatoes, and preferences for doneness vary, cook until yours are done to your liking. For me that was nearly 20 minutes in my waffle maker but start peeking at about 10 minutes in case yours is a sizzler.
Waffle-Iron Tater Tot Hash browns
1 bag frozen tater tots
salt to taste
ketchup (for serving, if desired)
1 Spray a hot waffle iron generously with nonstick cooking spray.
2 Place frozen tater tots on top of the hot waffle iron. Press the waffle iron closed, using a bit of pressure as needed to slowly lower the lid over the tater tots. After 1 minute, open the waffle iron and add any tater tots to empty spots, as needed. Close the lid and cook until crispy and golden brown.
- 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, or as needed
- 1 (15.25 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
- 1 (4.5 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained
- 1 cup diced green bell pepper
- ½ cup mild salsa
- ½ large tomato, diced
- 3 tablespoons mild nacho cheese sauce
- 1 pound ground beef
- ¼ cup mild taco sauce
- 1 (16 ounce) package frozen bite-sized potato nuggets (such as Tater Tots®)
- 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
Mix corn, mushrooms, green bell pepper, salsa, tomato, and nacho cheese sauce together in a bowl. Layer mixture over the bottom of the prepared dish. Mix ground beef and taco sauce together in a separate bowl add to the corn mixture in the dish and stir together. Layer potato puffs on top of casserole. Top with shredded Mexican cheese blend.
Bake in the preheated oven until beef is no longer pink, about 25 minutes.
Set oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven's broiler. Broil casserole until top is golden brown, about 5 minutes.
A few days ago, I had my granddaughters over for a few hours. I asked if they wanted pizza.
The younger one said she doesn&rsquot like pizza crust (a recent development), but she likes the topping. So I asked if she still likes Tater Tots.
Her response? &ldquoOf course I do, Nana.&rdquo
That got me to thinking. I just happen to know some of their hot buttons in the kitchen.
Both granddaughters are foodies, so they are excited about new foods they&rsquove never tried.
So I asked if she&rsquod like pizza on a Tater Tot crust. Since my granddaughters know I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, they both nodded.
Tater Tot pizzas didn&rsquot originate in my kitchen, but they do hang out here now. In fact, they&rsquove become a favorite Tater Tot treat, along with my hamburger Tater Tot casserole.
It&rsquos amazing how versatile Tater Tots are. They&rsquore also inexpensive, so there&rsquos very little risk in trying new things with them.
Tater Tot Waffle Pizzas Ingredients
You only need a few ingredients for basic Tater Tot waffle pizzas. I use Tater Tots, pizza sauce, and cheese.
This time, I also added pepperonis. I&rsquoll probably try something different next time.
You can pretty much use whatever you would put on any pizza.
You can add mushrooms, diced peppers, olives, sausage, or whatever else you like. But this was a great one to start with because it&rsquos such a traditional pizza topping.

How to Make Tater Tot Waffle Pizzas
These little treats are super easy to make, but you do have to be careful. If you&rsquore not, they&rsquoll fall apart. However, they&rsquoll still taste good.
First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. After you make the crust for the &ldquopizza,&rdquo you&rsquoll need to bake it in the oven with the toppings.
While the oven heats up, you&rsquoll need to spray the waffle maker with nonstick spray and heat it up. Then place the Tater Tots close together on the bottom plate.
Next, press the lid down on the Tater Tots to flatten them. This also presses them together.
Let them cook until the exterior of the crust is crunchy. It took about 5 minutes to get to this point on my Dash mini waffle maker.
If you want a bigger &ldquopizza,&rdquo use a standard size waffle maker.
After they&rsquore done, carefully remove the Tater Tot crust and transfer it to a baking sheet. If it falls apart, you can piece it back together.
Remember that cheese makes a good glue, so you can wedge a few shreds of cheddar in there.
Add the pizza sauce. I like to use the back of a spoon to spread it out.
Then, sprinkle on some cheese. I like just a little bit, but you can use as much as you like.
Finally, top it with pepperoni or whatever else you want.
Pop the pan into the oven and bake it for 7 minutes. Keep a close eye on it the last couple of minutes to make sure it doesn&rsquot burn.
When I made them with my granddaughters, the ones on the edge of the pan browned more quickly than the one in the middle.
Perfect for a Snack or Light Lunch
These are tasty treats for an afternoon snack or a light lunch. You can add a salad or fruit to complete the meal.
Although I call these little waffle pizzas, they&rsquore difficult to eat with your hands. For that reason, we used forks.
This treat got a two thumbs-up from the granddaughter who currently doesn&rsquot like traditional pizza crust. In fact, she said this is now her favorite.
Both of them wanted more, so we made another batch. That makes this nana smile because it makes me happy when they like the food we cook together.
There are so many fun snacks that kids enjoy helping to make. My granddaughters enjoy mac and cheese, so we sometimes make that.
They also love pimento cheese sandwiches, so I let them make their own. Somehow, that makes them taste even better.
After I made this homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream, both of my granddaughters tasted it and said it was wonderful! I agree!
How to Make Waffle Iron Tater Tots
- Preheat the waffle iron on med-high heat. Carefully place the defrosted, slightly warmed tater tots in the middle of the waffle iron.
- Press down the lid as much as you can. As the tater tots cook, you can press down a little more to make sure they are pressed and nice and crispy.
- Cook the tater tot waffle for 4-5 minutes. Carefully remove the waffle using a fork and enjoy it immediately.
How to Quickly Defrost Frozen Tater Tots
Since tater tots usually come in frozen form, you will want to defrost them before placing them in the waffle iron. I find it’s easier to shape them and they cook faster. Simply place the tater tots in a microwave-safe bowl and defrost them for 1 minute. Stir them and cook them for another 2 minutes. They should be unfrozen (or mostly unfrozen). Don’t worry if they look a little soggy, they will crisp right up in the waffle maker.
What to Put on Top of a Tater Tot Waffle
My first choice is a fried egg. There is nothing better than something crispy like a tater tot waffle with a runny egg on top, in my opinion. But, if you don’t care for runny eggs or don’t like eggs at all, here are a few more ideas:

Which Waffle Maker To Use
I used my Cuisinart waffle maker to make my tater tot waffles. I like it because it’s not too big and not too small, it’s just right, LOL! This recipe should work in any waffle iron. If your waffle maker is larger or a Belgian style, you may need to add more tater tots. Every waffle iron will perform differently, of course, but these tater tot waffles are pretty easy to adapt.

Preparation of scrambled eggs:
Over medium-low heat, melt the butter in a medium-sized nonstick skillet. Coat the pan evenly with butter.
Whisk the eggs, making sure not to overbeat them, just so they are incorporated.
Add eggs to center of the pan.
Wait until the edges of the eggs just begin to set. Bring a spatula around the edges of the pan to create large, soft curds. Do not agitate aggressively. Instead, gently push and fold the eggs.
Cook for about 2-3 minutes. Remove eggs from heat and serve with waffle.
Preparation of waffle:
In an even layer, pile a handful of tater tots across the entire waffle iron. Sprinkle with salt.
Cheesy Tater Tot Waffle With Bacon
These guys are mega-delicious and there’s nothing easier than to assemble them. The crispy tots and bacon backed up by the bell pepper dices are being engulfed by the melted cheddar. The sky is the limit as to what and how many ingredients you toss between the two potato waffles. Enjoy your breakfast!
Making Tater Tot Waffles
Out of every creative waffle recipe we have tried and tested, this was by far the easiest waffle to make ever. While we topped our Tater Tot Waffles with sour cream and diced green onions, you really only need one ingredient: tater tots.
The trick is putting the bag of tater tots in the refrigerator and not the freezer when you get home from the grocery store. Frozen tater tots don’t work at all.
After the tater tots have been in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours and your waffle iron is preheated on medium heat, all you have to do is arrange the tater tots over the top of the waffle wells as tightly as you can and close the lid to cook them.
QUICK TIP: The more gaps there are between the tater tots, the more likely it is that your waffle is going to break apart when you try to remove it from your waffle iron — and then you just have tater tots that were cooked in a waffle iron. Still good, but not a waffle.
I let the first Tater Tot Waffle cook in the waffle iron for about 5-7 minutes to get them nice and crispy and to get them to really stick together, and when removing the waffle from the waffle iron, only a couple tater tots fell off. When making the second Tater Tot Waffle, I added a few tater tots on top of any gaps in the single layer of tater tots. It was a little bit harder to close the waffle iron lid, but the extra tots helped that waffle stick together much better.
When the Tater Tot Waffles were done cooking, we topped them with dairy-free sour cream and some diced green onions and pretty much devoured them. I’m glad that no one else was at our house at the time to see us plow through these waffles like giant pigs. I think we even moaned and groaned a bit at the deliciousness we were experiencing. They were SO GOOD. I mean, SO SO GOOD.
QUICK TIP: Don’t just buy plain tater tots, look for seasoned tater tots!
All I could think of was making them again and again with different toppings. These Tater Tot Waffles would be awesome for breakfast, topped with eggs and bacon. They could be topped with barbecue sauce or ketchup or even ranch dressing. They could be a base for anything if you have an imagination.
Tater Tot Waffle Breakfast Sandwich Recipe
Sometimes you just gotta go with what’s on hand and this breakfast sandwich recipe was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve had!
We love breakfast but usually find ourselves eating it for dinner and often when I didn’t plan ahead.
Which in my case meant scoping out the premises and seeing what there was to work with.
In this case, the freezer offered up tater tots that really needed a home. We always have eggs and if we don’t, I know I can always rely on my neighbor who raises chickens!
Bacon? Really? Who can go with out?
The cheese sauce? Well, I must admit this was an impulse purchase. I saw it at Kroger and the ingredients sounded OK so like I said…I must have been hungry that day while grocery shopping.
But yeah. I am ALWAYS hungry!
And now…about this breakfast sandwich. I love breakfast sandwiches. This one may not actually qualify because it is open faced and really couldn’t be wrapped up in a paper bunting so easily.
But for lack of creativeness at this point in the evening, I am choosing to call it a breakfast sandwich with a tater tot waffle substituting for bread.
I hope no one fights me on this.
After all, I’d do just about anything to get my almost daily fix of potatoes.

How do you make a tater tot waffle?
Since every waffle iron is different, I’ll tell you how mine are made. My very old Salton waffle iron is square and makes two waffle at a time. It takes me 15 tater tots per waffle.
Merely preheat the waffle iron, put in the defrosted tater tots, shut the lid, and let them cook for about two to three minutes.
This makes them stick to each other and you end up with a nice crispy potato waffle. Yes, you can do this with defrosted hash browns, too!
Don’t have a waffle iron? Well, you should, but if you don’t I suppose you could bake them as usual though they may not have the super crunchy golden crust that is created by none other than the waffle iron.
This was a good discovery. These tater tot waffles really are quite scrumptious. In fact, I could have made this a true sandwich with a tater tot waffle on the top and bottom, but I restrained myself.
After all, this is the year of the wedding diet and so far I’ve lost three pounds. It wasn’t easy, but I am trying to focus on said wedding and not the diet!
So with that being said, I leave the option up to you whether this breakfast sandwich should be open faced or not.
I fried the bacon crisp and because we were so hungry, I cooked it in the microwave which makes like zero mess.
And that cheese sauce is of the queso version. I did doctor it up, by adding in some pickled jalapeno pepper juice. It really was great drizzled on this breakfast/dinner sandwich.
Eggs? Well by now you should know that Manservant always like his fried and Mrs. Manservant prefers scrambled. Take your pick!
Please don’t forget the pickled jalapenos o n the top. These are truly a necessity!
